Pingdom SMS Alerts: Cost, SMS Credit Limits and Alternatives With Included Phone Calls
Pingdom includes SMS alerts as a monthly credit bundle that scales with the plan, and it has no voice call channel. What each tier gives you, how quickly a real outage uses the credits, and when a monitor with calls and texts included costs less.

Put an endpoint under monitoring
Email alerts on every plan, phone call and SMS from Professional. Plans from $29 a month.
Pingdom sends SMS alerts from a monthly credit bundle that comes with every paid Synthetic Monitoring plan: 50 credits on the entry tier of 10 uptime checks at $18 a month, rising to 1,000 credits at 500 checks. One credit is used for each text sent to each phone. Pingdom alerts by email, SMS and mobile push, but it does not place voice calls, so a team that needs a phone to ring has to add another service.
That is the short version. Whether the bundle is enough depends on how many people you text, how often an alert repeats and how badly your worst endpoint flaps, and the arithmetic surprises most teams the first time they run it.
How much do Pingdom SMS alerts cost?
Pingdom SMS alerts have no separate price per message on the pricing page. They come bundled with the uptime checks you buy, and the bundle grows in steps with the plan. These are the lower tiers as listed on Pingdom's own pricing page in September 2026:
| Uptime checks | Monthly price | Billed annually, per month | SMS credits per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | $18 | $16.50 | 50 |
| 25 | $40 | $36.33 | 100 |
| 50 | $78 | $71.50 | 200 |
| 100 | $149 | $136.42 | 350 |
| 200 | $290 | $265.17 | 400 |
| 500 | $680 | $622.67 | 1,000 |
Two things stand out. The credits scale much more slowly than the checks: going from 100 to 200 checks doubles the price but adds only 50 texts. And above 500 checks the bundle stays at 1,000 credits until 3,000 checks, where it becomes 1,500. Large monitoring estates get a lot more checks per text than small ones do.
If the credits run out before the monthly refill, Pingdom's documentation describes an Autofill SMS Credits extra service that buys a set number of credits when the balance drops below a limit you choose, added to your monthly or annual bill. The amount you can buy depends on your plan, and the per credit price is shown inside the account rather than on the public pricing page.
How many SMS credits does a real outage use?
More than people expect, because the count multiplies three ways: by the number of people texted, by the number of times the alert repeats and by the number of separate incidents. Pingdom lets you resend an alert for an ongoing issue up to four times, which is sensible, and it means one incident can cost five texts per person before anyone has replied.
A worked example makes it concrete. Take a small team that texts three people and uses all four resends:
- One outage that lasts long enough to use every resend: 3 people times 5 texts = 15 credits
- Add a recovery text to the same three people: 18 credits
- On the 50 credit bundle that is fewer than three outages a month before autofill starts charging
The case that really hurts is a flapping endpoint. A server that goes down and comes back ten times during one bad night opens ten incidents. At three people with a down text and an up text each, that is 60 credits, more than the entire entry bundle, spent on a single night. The failure mode is not a large bill, it is the balance hitting zero halfway through the outage that actually matters.
None of this makes Pingdom a bad monitor. It makes SMS a metered resource you have to budget, and it pushes teams toward texting fewer people and turning off resends, which is the opposite of what you want at 3am.
Does Pingdom make phone calls when a site is down?
No. Pingdom's alerting page lists email, SMS and push notifications to the Android and iOS apps as its contact methods. There is no built in automated voice call. Teams that want a phone to ring either connect Pingdom to an incident management tool that calls, or forward the alert through an email to voice or email to SMS gateway.
Those workarounds are real and they do work, but each one adds a second subscription, a second bill and a second system that has to be up during your outage. If the reason you want a call is that nobody reads texts at night, it is worth asking whether the monitor itself should be the thing that calls.
Why do people look for Pingdom SMS alternatives?
The reasons tend to come down to three triggers:
- The credits ran out mid incident. Someone finds out the next morning that the alert stopped sending at 2am.
- The team wants a voice call. SMS is easy to sleep through, and adding a paging tool on top of Pingdom only for calls feels like paying twice.
- The bundle forces a bigger plan. Buying 100 more checks you do not need, only to get more texts, is a poor trade.
The search for an alternative usually starts from a Zapier or email to text integration, and that is a legitimate fix if your only problem is formatting or routing. It does not change the underlying constraint that each alert is a billable message somewhere.
Pingdom SMS alerts compared with alternatives
This table compares how SMS and voice alerts are packaged, not the full feature set of each product. Prices and allowances were checked on each vendor's own pricing page in September 2026.
| Tool | SMS alerts | Voice call alerts | How messages are billed | Entry price with SMS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pingdom | Yes | No | Monthly credit bundle per plan, autofill extra service | $18 a month for 10 checks and 50 credits |
| UptimeRobot | Yes | Yes | Credits that do not renew with the plan, packs bought separately | Solo from EUR 10 a month for 10 monitors |
| Email to SMS gateway on top of Pingdom | Yes | Some offer it | Separate subscription, usually per message or per tier | Pingdom plan plus the gateway |
| TrackDowntime | Yes | Yes | Included on Professional and Enterprise, not metered | $99 a month for 25 endpoints |
Be honest with yourself about which column matters. If you monitor ten URLs, text one person and rarely have outages, Pingdom's $18 plan with 50 credits is the cheaper answer and you should keep it. The math changes when three or more people need the alert, when you want a call rather than a text, or when an unstable endpoint can burn a month of credits in a night.
When does a plan with included calls cost less than Pingdom?
Compare the plan you would really need rather than the entry price. At 25 checks Pingdom is $40 a month with 100 credits, and TrackDowntime Professional is $99 a month for 25 endpoints, so on the sticker Pingdom is cheaper. The gap closes when you add what Pingdom does not include:
- Voice calls. The cheapest email to voice forwarding services start at around $10 a month, and incident management tools that place calls usually charge per user on top of that.
- Extra credits. A team of three with a couple of unstable endpoints will often go through 100 credits and start autofilling.
- The upgrade you buy only for texts. Moving from 25 to 50 checks to reach 200 credits takes Pingdom to $78 a month.
On our plans, SMS and phone call alerts are included on Professional at $99 a month and Enterprise at $299 a month for unlimited endpoints, and every number on an endpoint gets both the call and the text on every alert round. Annual billing brings Professional to $49 a month. The cost of an outage does not change the bill, which is the point: nobody on the team has a reason to remove their number to save credits. We laid out the wider per site comparison, including seat fees, in uptime monitoring pricing per site.
Monitoring is rarely the only subscription quietly growing, either. If Pingdom is one line in a long list of tools billed to the company card, it is worth taking a wider look at how you track cloud and SaaS spend before the renewal dates arrive, since the same bundle and overage pattern shows up across a lot of infrastructure tools.
What to look for if you switch from Pingdom for SMS alerts
Whatever you move to, check these five things before paying. They are the details that decide whether alerts still reach someone during a long outage.
- Are texts and calls metered? If yes, ask exactly what happens when the balance is zero during an incident.
- Does every listed number get the alert? Some tools alert one contact at a time or charge per seat for more.
- How long do repeats continue? Four resends covers a short outage. A failure over a weekend needs a schedule that keeps going.
- Does a single blip trigger a text? Retries before an incident opens are what keep a monitor from teaching everyone to ignore it.
- Is there a recovery message on the same channel? The person woken by a text should learn it is fixed without logging in.
For reference, this is how TrackDowntime answers them. Texts and calls are not metered. Every number on the endpoint is called and texted on each round. Alerts repeat at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 minutes, then at 2, 4, 8, 24, 48 and 96 hours while the outage continues. Timeouts are rechecked twice before an incident opens. Recovery goes out by SMS and email.
Moving your Pingdom checks across
The migration is mostly copying URLs. Export or list your Pingdom uptime checks, then add each one as an endpoint with the same expected status code and a similar timeout. Put the checks that matter most at night on the 60 second interval, add the phone numbers of whoever should be woken, and run both monitors side by side for a week so you can compare what each one caught.
If your checks point at servers and APIs rather than web pages, set them up against a health check route, which gives a more useful signal than the homepage. We walk through that setup, and exactly how the call and text escalate, on the server down alert page. For website outages the same alerting is covered on downtime alerts by phone call, and the full plan comparison is on pricing.
