For teams paying Datadog per test run just to know a site is up
Datadog Uptime Monitoring Alternative for Datadog Uptime Checks and Synthetics at a Flat Price
Datadog bills every uptime check as a synthetic API test run. One URL checked every minute from one location is 43,200 runs a month, about $21.60 at the annual rate, and each extra location multiplies it. Phone calls need a separate On-Call seat. TrackDowntime checks each endpoint every 60 seconds, calls every number you attach, and charges one flat price for 25 endpoints or for unlimited.
Professional is $99 a month for 25 endpoints with calls and SMS to several numbers. Enterprise is $299 for unlimited endpoints. No per run, per seat or per message fees.
Add an endpoint
- Billing unit
- Per endpoint, flat plans
- Check interval
- 60 seconds on Professional and Enterprise
- Alert channels
- Phone call, SMS, email, Slack, webhook
- People who get the call
- Every number on the endpoint
Paste the URL, create your account, and the first check runs right away.
What is the cheapest way to replace Datadog uptime checks
If Datadog Synthetics is only doing uptime checks for you, move those checks to a monitor priced per endpoint rather than per test run. Datadog lists API tests at $5 per 10,000 runs billed annually, $6 month to month and $7.20 on demand, so a single URL checked every minute from one location costs about $21.60 to $31.10 a month. TrackDowntime covers 25 such endpoints for $99 a month, with phone calls included.

What changes when uptime checks leave Datadog
Datadog is an excellent observability platform, and its synthetic tests tie straight into APM traces, logs and dashboards. The trouble is the meter. Uptime is the most repetitive thing you can ask it to do, and every repetition is billed. Teams that move uptime out usually keep Datadog for everything else.
A price that does not count checks
Professional covers 25 endpoints checked every 60 seconds for $99 a month, or $49 a month billed yearly. Enterprise covers unlimited endpoints for $299, or $149 yearly. Adding a location or tightening an interval never changes the bill, because there is no per run meter.
Phone calls without an On-Call seat
Datadog pages by phone through On-Call, listed at $20 per seat a month on annual billing. Here you type every number that should ring on the endpoint, separated by commas, and each one gets an automated call and an SMS the moment the check fails.
Calls that repeat until the site is back
Call, SMS and email go out at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 minutes, then at 2, 4, 8, 24, 48 and 96 hours while the endpoint stays down. Recovery is sent by SMS and email so whoever woke up knows it is over.
Checks that tell an outage from a blip
A wrong status code opens an incident on the first check. A timeout is rechecked twice, 5 seconds apart, and a DNS timeout three times, 10 seconds apart, before anyone is woken. Those rechecks cost nothing extra.
Per endpoint status, timeout and headers
Each endpoint gets its own expected status code, a timeout from 5 to 60 seconds, a follow redirects switch and custom request headers, so an authenticated health endpoint or an API base URL can be checked the same way a homepage is.
An outage record you can export
Every incident is stored with its start, end and measured duration: 30 days on Starter, 90 on Professional and no limit on Enterprise. Export the history to CSV when a customer, an auditor or your own SLA asks for proof.
Moving uptime checks off Datadog without losing coverage
Step 1
Pull the tests that are pure uptime
In Synthetic Tests, filter for single step HTTP tests whose only assertion is a status code or a response time. Those are the ones burning runs for a yes or no answer. Multistep API tests and browser tests stay in Datadog.
Step 2
Add each URL with its phone numbers
Paste the URL, set the expected status code and timeout, add any headers the endpoint needs, and enter every number that should ring. Different endpoints can call different people.
Step 3
Run both for a week
Keep the Datadog test running while TrackDowntime checks the same URL every 60 seconds. Compare what each one caught. Both check from outside, so nothing in your stack changes.
Step 4
Pause the Datadog test and watch the bill
Once you trust the alerts, pause or lower the frequency of the matching Datadog tests. Your synthetic usage in Plan and Usage drops by 43,200 runs a month for every 1 minute, single location test you turn off.
Does Datadog do uptime monitoring?
Yes. Datadog does uptime monitoring through Synthetic Monitoring: an HTTP API test requests a URL on a schedule from one or more managed or private locations and alerts when an assertion fails. Datadog's pricing FAQ says each hit on your endpoint counts as one test run, and gives the example that a test run from 3 locations every minute counts as 180 test runs an hour.
So Datadog uptime works well, and it is billed like a utility. The list price for API tests is $5 per 10,000 runs on annual billing, $6 month to month and $7.20 on demand. Browser tests are priced separately at $12, $15 and $18 per 1,000 runs. The full arithmetic at 5 to 650 URLs, including retries and multistep tests, is in our Datadog Synthetics pricing breakdown.
How much does Datadog uptime monitoring cost for 25 sites?
At list price, 25 URLs checked every minute from a single location cost about $540 a month on annual billing, $648 month to month and $778 on demand. Check them from three locations, which is what most people set up so that one bad region does not page anyone, and the annual figure becomes $1,620 a month. If three people need phone calls through Datadog On-Call, add three seats at $20 each on annual billing.
The same 25 endpoints on TrackDowntime Professional are $99 a month, or $49 a month billed yearly, with calls and SMS to as many numbers as you attach. Past 25, Enterprise covers unlimited endpoints for $299. Datadog customers with large commitments often negotiate below list, so treat these as the ceiling of what you pay, and check your own contract.
When Datadog is the better choice
Stay on Datadog for any check where the answer is more than up or down. Browser tests that log in and click through a checkout, multistep API tests that pass a token from one call to the next, checks from private locations inside your network, and tests that link a failure to the APM trace that caused it are all things we do not sell. Datadog also checks from many regions, and we check from a single location.
Stay too if you only run two or three URLs. At that size a single location Datadog test at the annual rate costs less than our $99 Professional plan. The case for moving gets strong around five endpoints at one minute, and overwhelming past fifteen, where even our Enterprise plan at $299 with unlimited endpoints is cheaper than Datadog's list price.
Does Datadog send phone call alerts when a site is down?
Yes, through Datadog On-Call, which is a separate seat based product. Its documentation lists push notifications, email, SMS and phone calls as contact methods, notes that phone support varies by country, and says landlines and VoIP numbers are not supported for SMS. Datadog lists On-Call at $20 per seat a month billed annually, $24 month to month and $29 on demand. Without it, synthetic alerts go out through email, Slack and other integrations.
TrackDowntime takes the simpler path for small teams: no schedules and no seats. Every number on the endpoint gets the call at once, and the calls repeat on a fixed ladder until the site recovers. If you need rotations and escalation tiers, keep Datadog On-Call. If you want the phone to ring for whoever is on the list, see how our downtime alerts by phone call work.
What you give up by moving, stated plainly
TrackDowntime checks every 60 seconds from one location. We have no browser or multistep tests, no keyword or content assertions, no private locations, no status pages and no APM correlation. Our alerts are phone call, SMS, email, Slack and a signed webhook, and our checks look at status code, response time, timeouts, DNS and SSL expiry.
What you get in exchange is a fixed bill and a pager that reaches everyone. For teams whose Datadog synthetic line is mostly HTTP status checks on homepages, login pages and API base URLs, that is usually the part of the invoice that grows fastest and tells you the least. Move that part, keep Datadog for the tests that need it, and use our downtime tracker for the incident record with start, end and duration.
Who moves uptime checks from Datadog to TrackDowntime
Startups watching the Datadog invoice
Synthetics is a line that grows every time someone adds a URL. Moving plain HTTP checks to a flat plan takes it off the monthly surprise list without touching APM or logs.
Agencies with client sites in Datadog
Fifty client homepages at one minute are over a thousand dollars a month at list. On Enterprise they cost $299 with each client's own alert numbers.
SaaS teams proving an SLA
Calls wake whoever can fix it, and the incident log gives start, end and duration for the monthly uptime report, with CSV export on every plan.
Stores that cannot miss a night of orders
Checkout, cart and product pages checked every 60 seconds, and every phone on the list rings until the store is back.
Teams without On-Call seats
If only two people have On-Call and the rest of the team misses outages, attach every number to the endpoint instead of buying more seats.
Platform teams cutting test sprawl
Keep browser and multistep tests where they earn their cost, and move the hundreds of single step status checks to one flat Enterprise plan.

Questions people ask before moving uptime checks off Datadog
Is Datadog good for uptime monitoring?
Yes, technically. Datadog's HTTP tests check from many regions, alert on status code, latency and body assertions, and link failures to traces. The weak point is cost for plain uptime: every check is a billed test run, so 25 URLs every minute from one location run about $540 a month at the annual list rate.
How much does Datadog uptime monitoring cost?
Datadog lists API tests at $5 per 10,000 runs billed annually, $6 month to month and $7.20 on demand. One URL checked every minute from one location is 43,200 runs a month, so $21.60 to $31.10. Each extra location multiplies that. Our Datadog Synthetics pricing guide works it out at 5 to 650 URLs.
What is a cheaper alternative to Datadog Synthetics for uptime checks?
A monitor priced per endpoint instead of per run. TrackDowntime Professional covers 25 endpoints at 60 second checks with phone calls and SMS for $99 a month, and Enterprise covers unlimited endpoints for $299. From five one minute checks upward, a flat plan costs less than Datadog's list price for single location tests.
Can I keep Datadog and use a separate uptime monitor?
Yes, and most teams do. Keep Datadog for APM, logs, browser tests and multistep API tests, and move single step HTTP status checks to a separate monitor. Both check from outside your network, so nothing in your stack needs to change, and you can run them side by side before pausing the Datadog tests.
Does Datadog count each location as a separate test run?
Yes. Datadog's pricing FAQ says each hit on your endpoint is one test run, and a test run from 3 locations every minute counts as 180 test runs an hour. Tests from private locations are billed the same as managed ones, and each step of a multistep API test counts as its own test run.
Does Datadog send phone call alerts?
Yes, through Datadog On-Call, which supports phone calls, SMS, push and email and is sold per seat, listed at $20 a month billed annually. Phone support varies by country. TrackDowntime calls and texts every number attached to an endpoint with no seat fee, repeating until the site recovers.
How often should an uptime check run?
For anything that earns money or carries an SLA, every 60 seconds is the common standard, because a 5 minute interval can hide up to 5 minutes of each outage from the record. On Datadog every step down in interval multiplies the bill. On TrackDowntime Professional and Enterprise, 60 seconds is the price you already pay.
Can I get uptime SLA reports without Datadog?
Yes. TrackDowntime stores every incident with its start, end and measured duration and exports the history to CSV, which is what a monthly SLA report needs. History is kept 30 days on Starter, 90 on Professional and with no limit on Enterprise. See uptime monitoring for SaaS for the SLA side.
Stop paying per run to learn a site is up
Add the URLs your Datadog HTTP tests watch, attach every number that should ring, and run both for a week. The first endpoint takes about a minute.
