For agencies and developers comparing Oh Dear

Oh Dear Alternative With Phone Call Alerts and SMS Without a Vonage Account

Oh Dear has no built in phone call alerts, and its SMS only works once you connect your own Vonage account. TrackDowntime calls and texts every number on a client site, again and again until it recovers, with nothing to wire up and nothing billed per message.

Which Oh Dear alternative fits an agency that needs the phone to ring

If you like Oh Dear but need someone phoned when a client site goes down, pick a monitor with voice calls in the plan. Oh Dear has no native phone calls and sends SMS only through your own Vonage account. TrackDowntime Professional covers 25 endpoints for $99 a month and calls every attached number until recovery. Oh Dear stays cheaper at 10 sites and checks far more per site.

What changes when client paging moves off Oh Dear

Oh Dear is a well built monitor and the table further down keeps every row where it beats us, which is most of the feature list. These six points are only about the minutes between a client site failing and a person picking up the phone.

A call, not a chat message

Oh Dear notifies through Slack, Teams, email, webhooks and on-call tools. None of those ring a phone on their own. Here the automated voice call is part of Professional and Enterprise.

No SMS gateway to run

Oh Dear sends texts only through a Vonage API key and secret you supply, so you hold a second account, a second bill and a second thing to break. Here SMS goes out from our side.

Every number, every round

Put the account manager, the developer and the owner on the endpoint. All of them get a call, a text and an email at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 minutes, then at 2, 4, 8, 24, 48 and 96 hours.

Nothing metered per message

Fifteen rounds to three people on a long outage cost the same as one email. There are no SMS credits, no per call charges and no top-ups on any plan.

Rechecks before anyone is woken

A wrong status code opens an incident on the first check. A timeout is rechecked twice, 5 seconds apart, and a DNS timeout three times, 10 seconds apart, so one slow response does not ring a phone.

An outage log with measured durations

Each incident is stored with its start, end and duration, for 30 days on Starter, 90 on Professional and without limit on Enterprise, and exports to CSV for the monthly client report.

Adding phone paging next to Oh Dear in an afternoon

Step 1

Pick the client URLs that justify a call

Most agencies monitor every site and only a handful carry an SLA or real revenue. List the stores, the booking flows and the retainer clients who expect a fix before they notice.

Step 2

Add each one with its phone numbers

Create the endpoint, set the expected status code, timeout, redirect handling and any custom headers, then type every number that should ring, separated by commas.

Step 3

Run both side by side for a week

Leave Oh Dear on broken links, DNS, certificates and status pages. Let TrackDowntime check the critical URLs every 60 seconds and see which alert actually got answered.

Step 4

Retire the Vonage wiring

Once calls and texts come from here, point Oh Dear at Slack and email only and close the SMS gateway account you were keeping for it.

Does Oh Dear have phone call alerts?

No. Oh Dear does not offer native voice call alerts. Its notification options are email, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Chat, Discord, Telegram, Pushover, ntfy, webhooks, and integrations with on-call tools such as PagerDuty and Opsgenie. If a phone has to ring, you either route alerts into a paid on-call product or build a webhook bridge to a voice provider yourself.

That matters most for agencies. A client store that goes down at 11pm on a Friday is not fixed by a Slack message in a channel nobody reads until Monday. A paging tool solves it, and PagerDuty's Professional plan is $21 per user a month on annual billing or $25 monthly, so a three person rota adds $63 to $75 a month on top of the monitor.

TrackDowntime puts the call inside the plan. On Professional and Enterprise every number attached to an endpoint is phoned and texted on each round until the check passes, and recovery sends an email and an SMS so the person who picked up knows they can go back to bed.

Does Oh Dear send SMS alerts?

Yes, but only through Vonage, formerly Nexmo. Oh Dear's own documentation says Vonage is the only SMS provider it integrates with: you create a Vonage account, generate an API key and secret, and paste them into the notifications screen. Texts are then sent from your Vonage account and paid for there. Twilio, AWS SNS, MessageBird and other gateways are not supported directly, and Oh Dear suggests forwarding its webhooks to your own code if you use a different provider.

For a developer that is ten minutes of setup. For an agency it is one more vendor relationship, one more card on file and one more credential that can expire without anyone noticing until the night a text does not arrive. With TrackDowntime there is nothing to connect: add a phone number to the endpoint and the SMS is part of the subscription.

When Oh Dear is the better choice

Stay on Oh Dear if you want breadth per site. One Oh Dear site covers uptime checks every minute, SSL certificate and certificate transparency monitoring, broken link and mixed content crawling, DNS record and blocklist monitoring, cron and scheduled task monitoring, performance tracking, unlimited status pages, unlimited users and branded monthly client reports. Downtime is confirmed from a second location before anyone is told. TrackDowntime does not crawl links, watch DNS, monitor cron jobs or publish status pages, and it checks from a single location.

Stay on Oh Dear too if price per site at small sizes decides it. Oh Dear Freelance is $55 a month for 10 sites and Solo Plus is $32 for 5. Our Professional plan is $99 a month for 25 endpoints and Starter is $49 for 5 endpoints with email alerts only. If nobody needs to be phoned, Oh Dear is the better deal under about 25 sites, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

What the switch costs at 10, 50, 100 and 200 client sites

Oh Dear prices by site in steps. TrackDowntime prices by endpoint and goes flat at Enterprise. The figures below are Oh Dear's US dollar prices, monthly billing, read from ohdear.app/pricing in October 2026, next to our monthly list prices. Yearly billing on Oh Dear gives two months free; ours halves the monthly price.

Client sitesOh Dear monthlyOh Dear yearlyTrackDowntime monthlyTrackDowntime yearly
10$55 (Freelance)$550$99 (Professional)$588
25$109 (Studio)$1,090$99 (Professional)$588
50$165 (Agency)$1,650$299 (Enterprise)$1,788
100$275 (Portfolio)$2,750$299 (Enterprise)$1,788
200$439 (Scale)$4,390$299 (Enterprise)$1,788

Two honest caveats. First, an Oh Dear site bundles many check types, while one TrackDowntime endpoint is one URL with an HTTP check and SSL expiry, so a fair count for a store might be two endpoints (homepage and checkout). Second, the Oh Dear column has no phone calls in it; add a paging tool if you need them. At 10 sites Oh Dear is clearly cheaper, at 25 the two are close, and at 50 on monthly billing Oh Dear wins again. Above 100 sites on monthly billing, or above 50 on yearly billing, a flat Enterprise plan with calls included costs less than the Oh Dear tier alone.

Running Oh Dear and TrackDowntime together

Many agencies do not need to choose. Oh Dear is excellent at the slow problems: a certificate expiring in 14 days, a broken link on a landing page, a DNS record someone changed, a cron job that stopped running. Those deserve an email or a Slack message in the morning. A storefront returning 503 at night deserves a phone call now.

The split that works is simple. Keep every client site in Oh Dear for the breadth and the branded reports. Add the five to twenty URLs per account that cost money when they fail to TrackDowntime with the numbers of the people who can fix them. Both services check from outside your servers, so nothing in the client stack changes, and the outage log here gives you measured durations for the SLA conversation.

Who adds TrackDowntime next to or instead of Oh Dear

Agencies with retainer SLAs

Each client URL carries its own phone numbers, and the incident log with durations backs up the monthly report and any service credit.

Freelance developers on call alone

One person, many client sites, and a phone that must ring at night. No SMS gateway account to keep alive.

Portfolios past 100 sites

Enterprise is $299 a month for unlimited endpoints, so the bill stops climbing in steps as the client list grows.

Teams that never set up Vonage

If Oh Dear alerts only reach Slack because nobody wired SMS, critical sites have no out of hours channel today.

Stores that trade overnight

Checkout and product pages are checked every 60 seconds and the owner and developer are phoned until orders flow again.

Laravel and PHP shops

Point checks at a health route with custom headers and an expected status code, and get a call when the app stops answering.

Questions people ask before leaving Oh Dear

What is the best alternative to Oh Dear?

It depends on what is missing. If you want broader checks per site at a lower price, Oh Dear is already strong and few tools match it. If the gap is paging, meaning a phone that rings until someone fixes a client site, pick a monitor with calls in the plan: TrackDowntime Professional covers 25 endpoints for $99 a month with unmetered calls and SMS.

Does Oh Dear have phone call alerts?

No. Oh Dear has no native voice call channel. It alerts by email, chat apps, Pushover, webhooks and on-call integrations like PagerDuty and Opsgenie. To get a phone call you route alerts into one of those paid tools or build your own webhook bridge to a voice provider.

Does Oh Dear send SMS alerts?

Yes, through Vonage only. You create a Vonage account, add its API key and secret in Oh Dear, and texts are sent and billed through your Vonage account. Other gateways such as Twilio are not supported directly; Oh Dear suggests forwarding its webhooks to your own code instead.

How much does Oh Dear cost?

In US dollars on monthly billing, Oh Dear runs from $17 a month for 2 sites to $439 a month for 200 sites, with Studio at $109 for 25 and Portfolio at $275 for 100. Yearly billing gives two months free. Every plan has every feature, and above 200 sites pricing is custom.

Is TrackDowntime cheaper than Oh Dear?

Not at small sizes. Oh Dear is $55 a month for 10 sites, while our Professional plan is $99 for 25 endpoints, close to Oh Dear Studio at $109. Above 100 client sites on monthly billing, or 50 on yearly, our flat Enterprise plan at $299 a month or $149 yearly costs less, and it includes phone calls.

Can I keep Oh Dear and use TrackDowntime only for calls?

Yes. Keep Oh Dear for certificates, broken links, DNS, cron and status pages, and add the URLs that justify a night call to TrackDowntime with the numbers of the people who can fix them. Both check from outside your servers, so nothing changes in the client stack.

How often does Oh Dear check uptime?

Oh Dear checks uptime every minute from a primary location and confirms a failure from a second location before marking the site down. TrackDowntime checks every 60 seconds on Professional and Enterprise and every 5 minutes on Starter, from a single location, with timeouts rechecked before an alert goes out.

Does TrackDowntime have status pages and client reports like Oh Dear?

No public status pages. TrackDowntime records every outage with its start, end and measured duration and exports the history to CSV, which agencies use for monthly client reports. If clients expect a hosted status page, keep Oh Dear for that and move only the paging here.

Get a phone call before the client does

Add the client URLs that cost money when they fail, attach every number that should ring, and run both monitors for a week. The first endpoint takes about a minute.
