Comparison for teams choosing an uptime monitor

StatusCake vs UptimeRobot Compared on Price, SMS Credits and Phone Call Alerts

StatusCake is the cheaper of the two at 100 monitors and refills its SMS credits every month. UptimeRobot checks faster, includes status pages and sells calls on prepaid credits. Neither keeps phoning several people until the site is back, which is the one thing TrackDowntime is built around.

StatusCake or UptimeRobot, the short answer

Choose StatusCake if you want 100 monitors for the lowest price ($24.49 a month on Superior, $20.41 yearly) plus page speed, domain and server checks and a monthly SMS allowance. Choose UptimeRobot if you want faster checks (30 seconds on Team, 15 on Scale), several seats and status pages included in the plan. If the deciding question is whether several people get phoned again and again until an outage ends, neither does that: StatusCake places one call per down event and UptimeRobot meters every call in credits that do not renew.

StatusCake calls once per down event and UptimeRobot bills each call in credits. The question that decides a night outage is whether the phone keeps ringing.

Where StatusCake and UptimeRobot actually differ

Both check websites and APIs, both have a free plan and both send email, SMS and chat alerts. The differences that change a buying decision are these six.

Price per monitor

StatusCake is cheaper at 100 monitors: $24.49 a month on Superior against 41 euros on UptimeRobot Team. At 200 to 300 monitors the two are close, $79.99 on StatusCake Business against 77 euros on UptimeRobot Scale.

Check interval

UptimeRobot is faster at every paid tier: 60 seconds on Solo, 30 on Team and 15 on Scale. StatusCake runs 1 minute on Superior and 30 seconds on Business, and 5 minutes on both free plans.

SMS alerts

StatusCake hands out free SMS credits every month, 75 on Superior and 400 on Business. UptimeRobot includes 10 to 200 credits by plan as a one time balance that does not renew and is shared across the team.

Phone calls

StatusCake offers a phone call integration that rings once per down event, at most once every 5 minutes per account. UptimeRobot calls on every plan, but each call uses 2 prepaid credits from the same balance as texts.

Seats and status pages

UptimeRobot Team includes 3 seats and 100 status pages, Scale 5 seats and unlimited pages. StatusCake Superior has 1 team member and Business 9, and status pages are a separate product from $14.95 a month.

Extra check types

StatusCake bundles page speed, domain expiry, SSL and server monitors into every paid plan. UptimeRobot covers HTTP, keyword, ping, port, DNS and heartbeat monitors with SSL on paid plans, and has no page speed tests.

How to decide in four steps

Step 1

Count your endpoints

List every URL that should page someone when it fails: homepage, checkout or login, API health route, client sites. Under 100, StatusCake Superior is the cheapest paid option of the two.

Step 2

Decide who must be woken

If one person reads alerts in office hours, email and Slack are enough and price should decide. If two or three people must be phoned at night, the call rules decide.

Step 3

Price the alerts, not only the plan

On UptimeRobot add credit packs for every call and text round. On StatusCake check whether 75 texts a month covers your rota, and whether one call per outage is enough.

Step 4

Run a week in parallel

Point the new monitor at the same URLs, keep the old one running, and compare which outages reached a person and how fast before you cancel anything.

Is StatusCake better than UptimeRobot?

Neither wins outright. StatusCake gives more for the money at 100 monitors and bundles page speed, domain and server monitoring into the same plan. UptimeRobot checks more often, includes seats and status pages, and has the larger free plan. For plain website and API uptime on a small budget, the deciding factors are usually check speed and how many people need logins.

Small details tip it. StatusCake Superior has only one team member, so a three person team lands on Business at $79.99. UptimeRobot Team covers three seats at 41 euros. But a team that needs 100 monitors and one login pays less on StatusCake than anywhere else in this comparison. Our StatusCake alternative and UptimeRobot alternative pages cover what happens when alerting is the real problem.

Which is cheaper, StatusCake or UptimeRobot?

StatusCake is cheaper at 100 monitors and roughly level with UptimeRobot at 200 to 300. Both are cheaper than TrackDowntime at every size up to 300 monitors, and we would rather say so here than have you find it later. Where we come out ahead is above 300 endpoints, and on what happens after the alert fires.

Does StatusCake do phone call alerts?

Yes, as an integration attached to a contact group. StatusCake's knowledge base says repeat alerts do not apply to phone calls, so you get one call when a test goes down, and the account sends at most one call every 5 minutes even if several tests fail together. SMS alerts do not repeat either. Email and mobile push do.

That design stops a big outage from producing a flood of calls. The price is that the call is a single chance. If it arrives at 3am and nobody picks up, nothing rings again until the next down event.

Does UptimeRobot do phone calls?

Yes, on every plan including the free one, but calls are paid for with prepaid credits. Each voice call uses 2 credits anywhere in the world and a text to a US number uses 1. Packs run from $3 for 10 credits to $100 for 1,000. The 10 to 200 credits bundled with a paid plan are a single allocation that does not renew.

For a three person rota that wants a call and a text per round, one round costs 9 credits, and an outage that repeats the alert 15 times costs 135. When the balance hits zero mid incident, the next call does not go out. Pack sizes and the auto refill rules are in our guide to UptimeRobot SMS credits and voice call costs.

Is UptimeRobot free for business use?

UptimeRobot's pricing page describes the free plan as good for hobby and non-profit projects. It gives 50 monitors at 5 minute intervals with 3 months of data, no SSL monitoring and no seats. StatusCake describes its free plan as for individuals and small businesses: 10 uptime monitors at 5 minutes, 1 page speed, 1 domain and 1 SSL monitor. For a business site, the paid tiers of either are the honest starting point.

When neither StatusCake nor UptimeRobot fits

Both tools are built to tell you something is down. Neither is built to make sure somebody is awake to fix it. If your last missed outage came down to one call or one text nobody saw, the fix is a call that goes to every number on the endpoint and repeats, at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 minutes and then at 2, 4, 8, 24, 48 and 96 hours, until the check passes. That is how our phone call downtime alerts work, with no credits and no monthly SMS allowance to watch.

We are narrower than either vendor and we say so. TrackDowntime checks HTTP and HTTPS endpoints, response time, DNS and SSL expiry from a single location. There are no page speed tests, no status pages, no keyword match and no public API. Alerts go out by phone call, SMS, email, a Slack channel and a signed webhook. If you need multi location checks or status pages, StatusCake or UptimeRobot will serve you better.

What each option costs a three person on-call team

Take 25 production endpoints, three engineers on US numbers, and four incidents a month with five alert rounds each.

On StatusCake, three logins push you to Business at $79.99 a month. SMS and calls do not repeat there, so four incidents use 12 texts of the 400 credit allowance and produce four calls, one per incident. On UptimeRobot, Team at 41 euros covers the seats. Each round of a call and a text to three people costs 9 credits, so twenty rounds cost 180 credits a month, about $25 in packs every month once the bundled 30 are gone.

On TrackDowntime Professional, $99 a month or $49 billed yearly, all three numbers are called and texted on every round until recovery, and the bill is the same whether the month had zero incidents or twenty. Every downtime is stored with its start, end and duration for 90 days, which our downtime tracker turns into an outage log you can export.
